Trivia question for Mar-09-2011

Olivia’s turn again and she fell in love with these guys as soon as she saw the first picture of them.  She said that she would put sunscreen on their faces so they wouldn’t burn so easy… 😉  Anyway, here is her trivia.  These odd looking primates are relatively hairless on most of their head which gives them an almost human-like appearance.  In fact, the redder their faces, the healthier the animal is.  Too little exposure to the sun actually makes their faces paler.

Their scarlet red faces are due to the lack of skin pigments and plentiful capillaries that run under their facial tissue.  These guys live in nomadic troops spending their lives high above the quagmire of the swamped rainforest, as they constantly search for the best fruit trees.  The conservation status of this species was changed from near threatened to vulnerable in the 2008 World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List because the species has declined at least 30% over the past 30 years (three generations) due to hunting and habitat loss.

So here are Olivia’s questions:  Tell us what this animal is called and also tell us what type of animal accompanies them as they roam through the forest and why?

Answer:

Congratulations to Gina for being the first with the correct answer. The red faced critter we featured is the Bald Uakari monkey. They are often shadowed by troops of Squirrel Monkeys, which follow Uakari’s because they are so good at finding fruit. Here is more on these cool monkeys:
