Trivia question for Jan-24-2011

Posted on Jan 24, 2011 in Trivia

Here is a common enough looking animal but Carter and Olivia found some cool facts about these guys.  Let’s see how good you are at today’s trivia:

Predators of these deer include tigers, leopards, dholes and mugger crocodiles. Red foxes also sometimes prey on their fawns.

An interesting relationship has been observed between herds of these deer and troops of the Northern Plains Gray Langur, a widespread leaf-eating monkey. The deer apparently benefit from the langurs’ good eyesight and ability to post a lookout in a treetop, helping to raise the alarm when a predator approaches. So here’s our questions:

Can you tell us what kind of deer this is and also tell us how the Langur monkey benefits from hanging around these deer?

Good Luck 😉

Answer:

Wow, Carter did a great job picking this picture out, he had everybody stumped.  The deer we featured is the Chital or Cheetal, also known as Chital Deer, Spotted Deer or Axis Deer which commonly inhabits wooded regions of Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and in small numbers in Pakistan.

The Langur monkeys benefit by hanging around herds of these deer because the deer have exceptional hearing which helps warn of predators.
